2024: A Year in Review. How Can We Make 2025 Even Better?

Two people laugh and chat with one another at HUB Cycling's Bike the Night event. They are both standing with their bikes. There are several other people with bikes in the field behind them.

2024 was a big year for biking, walking, and rolling throughout Metro Vancouver and the province. From community events to policy wins, HUB Cycling has worked nonstop to make cycling safer, more accessible, and more enjoyable for people of all ages and abilities.

Here are just a few highlights from 2024:

Advocacy Wins:

  • Advocating for safer streets: Our longtime advocacy efforts led to reforms to the Motor Vehicle Act to include a minimum safe passing distance and a definition for vulnerable road users.
  • Advocating for better infrastructure: Our Local Committees wrote 59 letters of recommendations to local governments. Together, we will #UnGapTheMap and promote safer biking in our neighborhoods.
  • Expanding bike-friendly spaces: The Bike Friendly Building team helped create safe bike parking, cycling designs, and is creating Canada’s first e-bike charging safety manual.

Education Wins:

  • Educating riders of all ages: Over 16,500 students received cycling education in Metro Vancouver, while 1,142 adults participated in Streetwise adult education courses and webinars.
  • Supporting seniors and youth: HUB Cycling ran a Seniors Cycling Program in Richmond, partnered with the Tsawwassen First Nation to provide free bikes, helmets, and locks for youth.
  • We confirmed the launch of a new Bike Bus program in Spring 2025 in partnership with the Ministry of Transportation and Transit this spring, getting more kids biking to school safely!

Community-Building Wins:

  • Bike the Night returned!: For the first time since 2019, over 800 participants rode 10 km around the Seawall and celebrated at David Lam Park. Together, we raised additional funds and showcased 27 local businesses!
  • We launched our first Cycling Towards Equity event in partnership with the Punjabi Market and Khalsa Diwan Society  Gurdwara for a bike celebration and social bike ride.
  • HUB Cycling collaborated with groups like Gravel Rides, Chill Rides, Cycling Without Age, and Spinal Cord Injury BC to promote rides for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, people with disabilities, and seniors.
  • We continued to build support for active transportation through our longest-running semi-annual event, Go by Bike Week, which resulted in 55,975 trips by bike, 724,819 kms cycled, and 157,120 kgs of greenhouse gases.
